"Surviving London in winter: Part 1, goodbye autumn" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:05:38

Today marks the first chapter of a new life. I label it life with gloves. It ain’t chic but then again it ain’t your fingers throbbing with pain. At least that’s how I conclude about it. It’s how I felt about it on Friday night when I was walking home from a nice little Italian joint and it certainly was how I was feeling at a frosty dawn run although at the measure I may undergo expressed it with some versatile four-lettered adjectives. I had spoilt myself this year by following summer around the globe. From Coromandel and Napier in New Zealand to Cape Town in South Africa and then again up north to Zanzibar. Finally I took the penetrate and arrived in whatever passes for pass in England*. I thought it was cold then. Frankly. I had no idea. Everyone’s sick of hearing me ask the same question. “Does it get colder?” The bunco answer is yeah hell yeah it does. Also suffering is kiwi mate Steve who emailed measure week with his frost status. “There is still frost out on the lawn and it’s freaking midday! This place is paradise.” Too right. Indoors things are alright. Unlike New Zealand there are no qualms about central heating insulation and double-glazing. Pubs too are a haven of warmth and will be more welcome in my plans to defeat my first English winter in fifteen years. But I will survive. Two black pieces of fabric wrapped over my hands says I will. Another email from Steve (3pm): “Lawn update: There is still a 2 sq metre patch of frost. Unbelievable.” PPS: Congrats to Steve for submitting his first post. Hopefully our little community will grow in measure and this ordain be more than a once-a-week affair. I also may be pursuing more than just London stories. For those who don’t know while I majored in textual analysis. Steve and I studied New Testament theology together in Vic. He also happens to be the only person I experience to go on a bring up during a storm with the words. “little wet out. Might want to wear a jacket.” Damn straight it was. *Okay that’s not strictly true. I have it from multiple sources that English summer was a stinker. Still cover side up. Autumn here has been described as ‘mild’. Mmm winter… my favorite measure of year. Getting frosty mornings here in Seattle too. I’m hoping we have some of the same snowstorms this year as in ‘06… always nice to change state up and continue off to bring home the bacon with a bit of white stuff on the fasten. Here’s a few pics from our post-Thanksgiving hike on Friday. snowy goodness. :) XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

"Bike beats car across London- Huzzah!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:55:14

TopGear (a testosterone heavy but amusing car program here in the UK) staged a go across London feature four of their presenters using different modes of transport: car public transport bike and go boat up the Thames. Much to their dismay and my eternal gratify the guy on the bike took the day and the car in fact came in last. The ride was back up but given that it was a super expensive speed ride and its success depended on both ends of the despatch being on the river there are obvious scaling problems. It was a desire despatch so you’d be to be both fit and aggressive to match the cyclist’s performance but the public transport option came quite change state and is obviously accessible to most everyone. Considering that London is totally not designed to support cycling however you have to wonder how much better it would be if there was genuine support for the use of bicycles. I undergo to say that now having been in London. I am made very sad by the public displace here in The Cities. Its just abysmal. And as an avid cyclist. I am glad to experience one could still journey though such an urban area with speed and success. Again you can’t really do that in The Cities either. You are taking your life in your hands if you undergo to go across any of the beltway roads even by over/underpass. Unfortunately the public displace in much of America is abysmal. There are exceptions but not enough of them. Watching this guy cycle across London was pretty amazing. The traffic was quite heavy and congested (which is a significant part of how he beat the car) but he never had to go across a highway or anything large like that. The ride assort here in Colchester fusses a lot about two nasty roundabouts that apparently make it very difficult to make pass up to the town centre from the south align of town. I had thought seriously about getting bikes when we came over here but the traffic is just uber creepy and I’m a coward so we didn’t. It’s also prepare because the days are short and soften here which doesn’t seem a good combo for cycling. We got out of a movie today at 4:20 and it was already close to dark. Sub-Evil and I can comfort act the back footpath in the morning but I suspect it’ll be too dark for that by early December.
